The situation at this site provides an invaluable opportunity to observe and analyse a naturally developing system, one for which there are no well documented precedents. The information generated would contribute to the Agency's knowledge and expertise in using the managed realignment option as a flood defence strategy, developing reliable prediction methods, avoiding adverse impacts and maximising habitat gains. The changes at Porlock have wider implications and so the methods employed and the results obtained also have a much greater generic value. Many other sites are currently being seriously considered for such schemes.
